In early May, we embarked on a meaningful mission to Nuevo Progreso, Guatemala, where our expertise in audiology shines a light on the importance of hearing health.
With every trip, we are filled with gratitude for the opportunity to extend our services to a community in need, alongside our dedicated team of audiologists, graduate students, ENTs, and translators.
This mission at Hospital de la Familia was more than just work: it was about making a difference, one patient at a time.
Setting New Records
It warms our hearts to share that during this trip, we provided hearing services to a record 179 patients in just one week! With a record-breaking achievement like this, our vision of a sustainable audiology clinic at the hospital is becoming a reality.
The services we provide, including earwax removal, hearing evaluations, hearing aid fittings, and device maintenance, are vital for both adults and children, many of whom are receiving ongoing care as returning patients.
It was incredibly rewarding to see our students learning and thriving in a real-world clinical environment and equally rewarding to witness the gratitude of the community we served.
The Significance of Hearing Testing
Hearing testing, especially through auditory brainstem response (ABR) tests, is a cornerstone of our practice. These diagnostic evaluations are crucial in identifying hearing loss in young children, especially those unable to participate in traditional behavioral tests.
Early detection of hearing issues can dramatically improve a child’s developmental outcomes. Knowing that our efforts help to shape a better future for these children is profoundly rewarding.
Facing Challenges with Humidity
The environment in Guatemala poses unique challenges that we tackled head-on.
For instance, we recorded the highest moisture level ever found in a hearing aid on this trip – 86.1 uL! Typically, we deal with less than 0.5 uL.
The high humidity emphasized the need for regular maintenance of hearing aids, a practice we uphold diligently using the same advanced equipment that serves our patients back home.
Building Bridges with Local Healthcare
Our mission extends to building strong connections with local healthcare providers, like doctors, social workers, and therapists, as we continue to serve the community.
These relationships enable us to address critical needs more effectively, ensuring that each return visit to Nuevo Progreso is even more efficient and impactful.
Looking Ahead with Hope
Plans are already underway for our next trip in November, with aspirations to broaden our services and reach more people. The smiles and stories we bring back from each mission inspire us every day to do more.
But the journey doesn’t stop with us: you can be a part of this change too. By choosing our team, you help sustain these meaningful projects. Your support transcends borders, impacting lives on a global scale.
As we reflect on our experiences in Guatemala, it’s a reminder that hearing health is critical not only abroad but also here at home. Whether for yourself or a loved one, regular hearing tests are a proactive measure to safeguard your well-being.
