Theodore H. Geballe—known as Ted to friends—was one of the most eminent American physicists of his generation. From his early work at Bell Labs during the dawn of transistor technology to decades at Stanford University, Ted’s career was always intertwined with sound, innovation, and careful observation.

Even a physicist who spent a lifetime exploring the fundamentals of sound and materials could not escape the challenge of hearing loss. In his 80s, Ted noticed his hearing was deteriorating.

For a man whose daily life involved teaching, mentoring, and attending complex technical discussions, missing even a few tones meant more than inconvenience – it threatened his professional engagement and personal connection.

As Ted reflected, “Professional excellence requires professional communication. Hearing isn’t just a personal comfort; it’s a tool for mentorship and innovation.”

This realization marked the beginning of his journey with Pacific Hearing Service, where expert care allowed him to continue sharing knowledge, engaging with students, and participating in scientific discussions well into his nineties. Our team focused not just on hearing aids but on understanding the full scope of Ted’s listening environment, including classrooms, home, and public lectures.

Although Ted has since passed away, his story continues to inspire us. It is a reminder that addressing hearing loss, even later in life, can open doors to connection, learning, and meaningful participation in work and community.

Challenging the "Nothing Can Be Done" Narrative

Initial consultations with Stanford physicians were discouraging. Ted was told that there was nothing that could be done for his hearing loss – a common story for patients with complex or age-related conditions. But he didn’t give up.

A recommendation from Burt McMurtry, a legendary university leader and philanthropist, led Ted to Pacific Hearing Service. His first visit left a lasting impression.

“The people there were very competent and wanted to help me,” he recalled. “They actually knew what they were doing, and they were cheerful about it, too!”

The combination of technical skills and warm, encouraging professionalism helped Ted feel confident in the solutions presented. Our team took the time to understand his needs in detail, asking about his teaching environments, social interactions, and long-term lifestyle goals. This thorough assessment was key to creating a customized plan that would serve Ted for years to come.

Solutions for the Lecture Hall

Ted’s hearing needs went beyond daily conversations. His lectures often took place in large, open rooms where acoustics could make even the clearest voice difficult to understand. While standard hearing aids improved his general hearing, they weren’t enough for crowded classrooms and echoing auditoriums.

We addressed this with a specialized solution: a separate remote microphone system. Ted explained, “That worked pretty well! I was able to converse with students in an open room.”

This assistive technology ensured that every lecture, seminar, and discussion could be heard clearly, restoring his ability to mentor and educate effectively.

The impact was immediate. Ted could follow discussions, hear questions from students, and engage fully in academic debates. He also noticed a subtle difference in everyday settings: group discussions at faculty meetings and social gatherings became easier to follow, and he no longer felt left out of complex conversations.

The combination of hearing aids and remote microphone technology provided not just audibility but confidence and ease in all communication.

Professionalism in the Home and the Lab

Ted trusted Pacific Hearing Service for over a decade. Our care extended beyond the classroom, integrating hearing solutions into every aspect of life. From quiet moments at home to active discussions in the lab, the right technology and patient-centered support enhanced Ted’s daily experience.

“The people there didn’t just fit hearing aids – they helped me connect with the world again,” Ted shared. Improved hearing brought renewed confidence and comfort, allowing him to participate fully in conversations, lectures, and social engagements.

He could hear subtle tonal differences in music and discussions, which had been lost over time. For a physicist, this level of clarity wasn’t just personal – it was a professional necessity.

Ted’s partnership with our team demonstrates that hearing care is more than devices; it is a commitment to sustaining intellectual engagement, social connection, and lifelong learning. His story continues to inspire patients of all ages, showing that it’s never too late to address hearing concerns and regain connection to the world around you.

Legacy Sustained by Sound

Ted’s story shows that complex hearing challenges, even in advanced age, can be addressed with expertise, patience, and innovative solutions. His ability to continue teaching at Stanford into his 90s is a testament to the power of individualized audiology care, remote microphone technology, and a team committed to excellence.

Even though Ted is no longer with us, his journey reminds us that hearing health can be addressed at any stage of life. Taking steps to explore your options can help you maintain connection, confidence, and the ability to participate fully in your personal and professional worlds.

For professionals, educators, and lifelong learners, Ted’s journey is a reminder: don’t accept “nothing can be done.” With the right expertise, you can continue to contribute, connect, and thrive.

FAQs

Q1: Can hearing aids help me hear clearly in large rooms or auditoriums?
Yes, standard hearing aids are effective for daily use, but for large spaces, additional assistive devices such as remote microphones can significantly improve clarity and reduce background noise. These systems allow you to hear voices from a distance, making presentations, lectures, and meetings more accessible and enjoyable. They also help reduce fatigue from straining to hear.

Q2: Are hearing aids suitable for complex or age-related hearing loss?
Absolutely. Advanced hearing technology can be customized to fit a variety of hearing profiles, including age-related changes and high-frequency losses. A professional audiologist will assess your specific needs and tailor devices for optimal performance, ensuring you can engage in conversations, participate in meetings, and maintain independence.

Q3: How long does it take to adjust to hearing aids and assistive devices?
Adjustment times vary, but many patients notice improvements almost immediately. Professionals can provide guidance, training, and follow-up care to ensure you’re comfortable and maximizing your devices. Combining hearing aids with supplemental tools like remote microphones often accelerates the adaptation process, even in challenging listening environments.
